Working Principle
The Thruster Brake is a fail-safe device. Braking force is applied to the brake shoes by a pre-stressed compression spring. When power is supplied to the integrated electro-hydraulic thruster, it overcomes the spring force and moves the brake shoes clear of the drum, allowing machinery to operate. When power is cut, the spring instantly applies the brake shoes to the drum, retarding speed and holding the load securely.
Braking Torque & Sizing Guidelines
Anand Systems MDT Electro-Hydraulic Thruster Brakes operate on a fail-safe spring-applied mechanism. In the unpowered state, heavy compression springs force the brake shoes firmly against the brake drum. When electrical power is applied, the centrifugal pump inside the electro-hydraulic thruster generates oil pressure, smoothly pushing the piston upward to release the brake shoes. This MDT 250-18 model is matched to a 250 mm brake drum.
Braking Torque Formula
T_b = 2 × μ × F_spring × (D_drum / 2) × η
Where μ = friction coefficient (0.35 to 0.40), F_spring = spring thrust force, D_drum = drum diameter in metres (250 mm = 0.250 m for this model), and η = mechanical linkage efficiency (0.90).
Operating Parameters & Drum Compatibility
- Duty cycle rating: S3-40% / S4-60%, up to 720 switching operations per hour.
- Hydraulic fluid: transformer oil (IS:335) or ISO VG 32 hydraulic oil.
- Brake drum compatibility: precision-balanced cast iron and forged / cast steel / EN-8 drums, 100 mm to 400 mm diameter.
